Index of Anatomy Articles

Anatomy is the scientific study of the structure of organisms including their systems, organs, and tissues. It involves the examination of the human body, in terms of both its macroscopic (gross) and microscopic structures. This index provides an overview of the key topics and concepts in the field of anatomy.

A

  • Abdomen: The part of the body that lies between the thorax (chest) and pelvis, containing a number of crucial organs including the stomach, liver, and intestines.
  • Anatomical terms of location: Standard terms used to describe the location of one anatomical structure relative to another.
  • Artery: A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the body's organs, tissues, and cells.

B

  • Bone: A rigid organ that constitutes part of the vertebrate skeleton, providing support and protection for the various organs of the body.
  • Brain: The organ of the body in the head that controls functions such as thinking, feeling, and coordinating the body's movements.

C

  • Cardiovascular system: The organ system that circulates blood throughout the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
  • Cell (biology): The basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known living organisms.

D

  • Digestive system: The system of organs responsible for getting food into and out of the body and for making use of food to keep the body healthy.

E

  • Endocrine system: The collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things.

F

  • Femur: The thigh bone, is the most proximal (closest to the hip joint) bone of the leg in humans and many other animals.

G

  • Gastrointestinal tract: The stomach and intestine, sometimes including all the structures from the mouth to the anus.

H

  • Heart: A muscular organ in most animals, which pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system.

I

  • Immune system: A host defense system comprising many biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease.

J

  • Joint: The location at which two or more bones make contact.

K

  • Kidney: A bean-shaped organ that serves several essential regulatory roles in vertebrate animals.

L

  • Liver: A large, meaty organ that sits on the right side of the belly, which detoxifies various metabolites, synthesizes proteins and produces biochemicals necessary for digestion and growth.

M

  • Muscular system: An organ system consisting of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles.

N

  • Nervous system: The part of an animal's body that coordinates its behavior and transmits signals between different body areas.

O

  • Ovary: An organ found in the females that produce eggs.

P

  • Pancreas: An organ of the digestive system and endocrine system of vertebrates.

Q

  • Quadriceps femoris: A large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh.

R

  • Respiratory system: A biological system consisting of specific organs and structures used for gas exchange in animals and plants.

S

  • Skeleton: The body part that forms the supporting structure of an organism.

T

  • Thyroid: A large ductless gland in the neck that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism.

U

  • Uterus: A major female hormone-responsive secondary sex organ of the reproductive system in humans and most other mammals.

V

  • Vein: A blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart.

W

  • Wrist: The complex joint between forearm bones, carpus, and metacarpals where the hand is attached to the arm.

X

  • Xiphoid process: The smallest of the three parts of the sternum, or breastbone.

Y
