Anatomical feature of the human ear

Spina helicis[edit]

The spina helicis is a small anatomical feature located on the auricle of the human ear. It is a slight projection found on the anterior border of the helix, which is the outer rim of the ear. This structure is considered a minor landmark in the complex anatomy of the ear, contributing to the overall shape and contour of the auricle.

Anatomy[edit]

The spina helicis is situated at the point where the helix begins its upward curve from the auricular tubercle, a small prominence on the helix. It is typically more pronounced in some individuals than others, and its prominence can vary with age and genetic factors. The spina helicis is composed of cartilage, like much of the auricle, and is covered by skin.

Function[edit]

While the spina helicis does not have a significant functional role, it contributes to the overall structure and appearance of the ear. The auricle, including the spina helicis, helps to collect and direct sound waves into the external auditory canal, aiding in the process of hearing.

Development[edit]

The development of the spina helicis, like other features of the auricle, occurs during embryogenesis. The auricle forms from the fusion of six small swellings known as the hillocks of His, which arise from the first and second pharyngeal arches. The precise formation of the spina helicis is part of the complex morphogenetic processes that shape the external ear.

Clinical significance[edit]

The spina helicis is generally not associated with any medical conditions. However, its prominence or shape can be altered in certain congenital conditions or as a result of trauma. In otoplasty, a surgical procedure to correct deformities or improve the appearance of the ear, the spina helicis may be reshaped or repositioned to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result.
