Alessandra Giliani
Italian anatomist and prosector
Alessandra Giliani (1307 – 1326) was an Italian anatomist and prosector from Persiceto, in the Province of Bologna. She is often celebrated as one of the first women to be recorded in the field of anatomy and medicine.
Early Life[edit]
Alessandra Giliani was born in 1307 in the small town of San Giovanni in Persiceto, near Bologna, Italy. Little is known about her early life, but it is believed that she showed an early interest in the sciences, particularly in the study of the human body.
Career[edit]

Giliani is best known for her work as a prosector, a person who prepares bodies for anatomical study and dissection. She worked under the guidance of Mondino de' Liuzzi, a prominent anatomist and professor at the University of Bologna. Mondino is credited with reviving the practice of human dissection in the study of medicine, and Giliani played a crucial role in his work.
As a prosector, Giliani was responsible for preparing cadavers for dissection, a task that required precision and a deep understanding of human anatomy. Her work contributed significantly to the anatomical studies conducted by Mondino and his students. It is said that she developed a method for injecting colored fluids into the veins of cadavers to better study the circulatory system, a technique that was innovative for her time.
Death and Legacy[edit]
Alessandra Giliani died in 1326 at the young age of 19. The cause of her death is not well-documented, but her contributions to the field of anatomy were recognized by her contemporaries. Mondino de' Liuzzi and his students honored her memory by acknowledging her work in their writings.

Giliani's legacy lives on as a pioneer for women in medicine and science. Her work laid the groundwork for future developments in anatomical studies and inspired many women to pursue careers in the medical field.
