Nervous Tissue

Nervous tissue or neural tissue is the main component of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. It is responsible for receiving and transmitting information throughout the body.

Pronunciation

Nervous tissue: /ˈnɜːrvəs ˈtɪʃuː/

Etymology

The term "nervous tissue" is derived from the Latin word "nervus" meaning "sinew, nerve" and the Old French word "tissue" meaning "a weave, a cloth".

Structure

Nervous tissue is composed of two types of cells: neurons and neuroglia. Neurons are the primary cells of the nervous system, responsible for conducting impulses. Neuroglia, or glial cells, provide support and protection for neurons.

Function

The main function of nervous tissue is to perceive stimuli from the external and internal environment, process the information, and elicit a response. This is achieved through the generation and transmission of electrical impulses.

Related Terms

  • Neuron: The basic working unit of the nervous system, designed to transmit information to other nerve cells, muscle, or gland cells.
  • Neuroglia: Also known as glial cells, they are non-neuronal cells that maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and provide support and protection for neurons in the brain and peripheral nervous system.
  • Nervous System: The complex network of nerves and cells that transmit signals between different parts of the body.
  • Brain: The organ that serves as the center of the nervous system in all vertebrate and most invertebrate animals.
  • Spinal Cord: A long, thin, tubular structure made up of nervous tissue, which extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column.
