Iliolumbar ligament

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

(Redirected from Ligamentum iliolumbale)

Iliolumbar ligament is a significant ligament in the human body that connects the fifth lumbar vertebra to the ilium, or hip bone. It is part of the posterior ligamentous system, which provides stability to the lumbar spine.

Etymology

The term "iliolumbar" is derived from the Latin words "ilium," meaning hip bone, and "lumbus," meaning loin. Thus, "iliolumbar" refers to the connection between the hip bone and the lower back.

Anatomy

The iliolumbar ligament is a strong band of fibrous tissue that extends from the tip of the transverse process of the fifth lumbar vertebra to the posterior part of the inner lip of the iliac crest. It is divided into two parts: the vertical part, which attaches to the iliac crest, and the horizontal part, which attaches to the transverse process of the fifth lumbar vertebra.

Function

The primary function of the iliolumbar ligament is to prevent excessive movement at the lumbosacral junction, which is the point where the lumbar spine meets the sacrum. By limiting movement in this area, the iliolumbar ligament helps to stabilize the lower back and prevent injury.

Clinical significance

Injury or strain to the iliolumbar ligament can cause lower back pain, a condition known as iliolumbar syndrome. This condition is often caused by sudden twisting or bending movements, and is commonly seen in athletes. Treatment typically involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery.
