Bone Cell

A Bone Cell, also known as an Osteocyte (pronounced: os·te·o·cyte, /ˌɒstiːəʊˈsaɪt/), is a type of cell that makes up the bone tissue in the human body. The term "Osteocyte" comes from the Greek words "osteon," meaning bone, and "kytos," meaning cell.

Types of Bone Cells

There are four main types of bone cells in the body:

  1. Osteoblasts: These cells are responsible for the formation of new bone tissue. They secrete a matrix for bone formation and are involved in the mineralization of the bone matrix.
  2. Osteocytes: These are mature bone cells that maintain the bone matrix. They are the most common type of bone cell and make up about 95% of the total bone cell population.
  3. Osteoclasts': These cells are responsible for the resorption of bone tissue. They break down the bone matrix and play a crucial role in bone remodeling and healing.
  4. Bone lining cells: These cells are found on the surface of the bone tissue and play a role in the exchange of minerals, like calcium and phosphate, between the bone and the blood.

Function of Bone Cells

The primary function of bone cells is to maintain the bone structure and support the function of other cells in the body. They are involved in the process of bone remodeling, which is the replacement of old bone tissue with new bone tissue. This process is crucial for the growth and repair of bones.

Related Terms

  • Bone marrow: The soft, spongy tissue that fills the inner part of the bones. It contains stem cells that can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.
  • Bone density: A measure of the amount of minerals, particularly calcium, in the bone tissue. It is an indicator of bone strength and health.
  • Osteoporosis: A condition characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, leading to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture.
