Hypophysial Artery
The Hypophysial Artery is a small artery that supplies blood to the Pituitary Gland. It is a branch of the Internal Carotid Artery, which is one of the main arteries supplying the brain.
Anatomy[edit]
The Hypophysial Artery originates from the Cavernous Segment of the Internal Carotid Artery. It travels inferiorly to reach the Pituitary Gland, which is located at the base of the brain. The artery divides into superior and inferior branches, which supply the anterior and posterior lobes of the Pituitary Gland, respectively.
Clinical Significance[edit]
The Hypophysial Artery is of clinical significance due to its role in supplying the Pituitary Gland. Disruption of blood flow through this artery can lead to Pituitary Apoplexy, a medical emergency characterized by sudden onset headache, visual impairment, and hormonal imbalance.
