The Preaortic Lymph Nodes are a group of lymph nodes located in the abdomen in front of the aorta, the main artery in the human body. They play a crucial role in the immune system, helping to filter harmful substances from the lymph fluid.

Anatomy[edit]

The preaortic lymph nodes are situated anterior to the aorta and are divided into three main groups: the celiac, superior mesenteric, and inferior mesenteric lymph nodes. These groups correspond to the three main branches of the abdominal aorta.

Celiac Lymph Nodes[edit]

The celiac lymph nodes drain the stomach, spleen, pancreas, and the upper parts of the duodenum.

Superior Mesenteric Lymph Nodes[edit]

The superior mesenteric lymph nodes drain the lower parts of the duodenum, the jejunum, ileum, and the ascending and transverse parts of the colon.

Inferior Mesenteric Lymph Nodes[edit]

The inferior mesenteric lymph nodes drain the descending and sigmoid parts of the colon and the rectum.

Function[edit]

The preaortic lymph nodes filter lymph fluid that has drained from the abdominal organs. They help to identify and destroy bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances that have entered the lymphatic system from these organs.

Clinical Significance[edit]

Enlargement or inflammation of the preaortic lymph nodes can be a sign of infection or disease in the organs they drain. This can be a useful diagnostic indicator for conditions such as appendicitis, colitis, or cancer.
