Pharyngeal branch of vagus nerve
Pharyngeal branch of vagus nerve[edit]

The pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve is a crucial component of the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) that plays a significant role in the innervation of the pharynx. This branch is primarily responsible for motor innervation to the muscles of the pharynx and soft palate, which are essential for swallowing and speech.
Anatomy[edit]
The pharyngeal branch arises from the inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve. It descends between the internal carotid artery and the external carotid artery, and it joins with branches from the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX) and the sympathetic trunk to form the pharyngeal plexus.
Pharyngeal plexus[edit]
The pharyngeal plexus is a network of nerves that innervates the muscles and mucous membrane of the pharynx. The pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve contributes motor fibers to this plexus, which are distributed to the constrictor muscles of the pharynx and the muscles of the soft palate, except for the tensor veli palatini, which is innervated by the mandibular nerve (a branch of the trigeminal nerve).
Function[edit]
The primary function of the pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve is to provide motor innervation to the muscles of the pharynx and soft palate. This includes the superior pharyngeal constrictor, middle pharyngeal constrictor, and inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscles, as well as the levator veli palatini, palatopharyngeus, and palatoglossus muscles. These muscles are involved in the complex process of swallowing and in the modulation of speech.
Clinical significance[edit]
Damage to the pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve can result in dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and dysphonia (voice changes), as the muscles it innervates are crucial for these functions. Lesions affecting this nerve can occur due to surgical trauma, tumors, or neurological disorders.
