Pulmonary valve

The Pulmonary valve (pronounced: pul-MON-ary VALV), also known as the pulmonic valve, is one of the four valves in the heart. It is a semilunar valve that lies between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery.

Etymology

The term "pulmonary" is derived from the Latin word "pulmo", meaning "lung", and the term "valve" is derived from the Latin word "valva", meaning "folding door".

Function

The primary function of the pulmonary valve is to prevent the backflow of blood from the pulmonary artery into the right ventricle during diastole. It opens when the pressure in the right ventricle exceeds the pressure in the pulmonary artery, allowing blood to flow into the lungs.
