The temporoparietalis muscle is a distinct muscle of the human head, located in the region of the temporal bone and the parietal bone. It is part of the muscles of facial expression and plays a role in the movement of the scalp.

Anatomy[edit]

The temporoparietalis muscle is a thin, fan-shaped muscle that originates from the lateral border of the galea aponeurotica, a tough layer of dense fibrous tissue that covers the upper part of the cranium. It extends laterally and inferiorly to insert into the cartilage of the auricle (the external part of the ear).

Function[edit]

The primary function of the temporoparietalis muscle is to assist in the movement of the scalp. It works in conjunction with the occipitofrontalis muscle, particularly the frontal belly, to elevate the eyebrows and wrinkle the forehead. This muscle is also involved in the movement of the auricle, although its role in humans is relatively minor compared to other mammals.

Innervation[edit]

The temporoparietalis muscle is innervated by the temporal branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII). This nerve is responsible for the motor innervation of the muscles of facial expression.

Blood supply[edit]

The blood supply to the temporoparietalis muscle is provided by branches of the superficial temporal artery, which is a terminal branch of the external carotid artery.

Clinical significance[edit]

In clinical practice, the temporoparietalis muscle is sometimes used in reconstructive surgery, particularly in procedures involving the ear or scalp. Its proximity to the temporal artery and the facial nerve makes it an important consideration in surgical planning.
