Muscularis mucosae

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Muscularis mucosae is a thin layer of muscle found in the walls of several organs, including the stomach, intestines, and esophagus. It is part of the mucosa, the innermost layer of the gastrointestinal tract. The muscularis mucosae is distinct from the muscularis propria, which is a thicker layer of muscle found further out in the walls of these organs.

Etymology

The term "muscularis mucosae" is derived from the Latin musculus meaning "muscle", and mucosa, referring to the mucus-secreting layer of the gastrointestinal tract.

Structure

The muscularis mucosae is composed of smooth muscle fibers. It separates the lamina propria, a layer of loose connective tissue, from the submucosa, a layer of dense irregular connective tissue. The muscularis mucosae is responsible for the movement of the mucosa, allowing for increased contact with the lumen, the inside space of a tubular structure.

Function

The primary function of the muscularis mucosae is to facilitate the movement of the mucosa, which aids in the absorption and secretion processes of the gastrointestinal tract. It also plays a role in the formation of gastrointestinal villi, small finger-like projections that increase the surface area of the intestine.

Clinical significance

Abnormalities in the muscularis mucosae can lead to various medical conditions. For example, thickening of the muscularis mucosae is often associated with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Additionally, the presence of muscularis mucosae invasion is a key factor in the staging of colorectal cancer.
