Common Bile Duct

The Common Bile Duct (CBD), pronounced as /ˈkɒmən baɪl dʌkt/, is a structure in the human body that carries bile from the liver and gallbladder into the duodenum. The term originates from the Latin words 'communis' meaning 'common', 'bilis' meaning 'bile', and 'ductus' meaning 'leading'.

Anatomy

The Common Bile Duct is formed by the union of the Cystic Duct and the Hepatic Duct. It is approximately 7-10 cm long and 6 mm in diameter. It descends within the free edge of the Lesser Omentum and passes posterior to the first part of the Duodenum and the head of the Pancreas.

Function

The primary function of the Common Bile Duct is to transport bile, a fluid produced by the liver, from the Gallbladder and Liver to the Duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Bile aids in the digestion and absorption of fats.
