Tissue (biology)
Tissue (biology)
Tissue (pronounced: /ˈtɪʃuː/ or /ˈtɪsjuː/) is a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. The term "tissue" comes from the French word "tissu", meaning "a thing that is woven", which is a reference to the fact that tissue is made of many cells woven together.
There are four basic types of tissue in the body of all animals, including humans. These are epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. Each of these types of tissue has a specific function and a distinctive appearance under a microscope.
Epithelial tissue covers the body surface and lines its cavities, forming a barrier that protects the body from the outside environment. It also forms many of the body's glands.
Connective tissue provides support and structure to the body. It includes various types of tissue, such as adipose tissue (fat), bone, and blood.
Muscle tissue is responsible for movement. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, which is attached to bones and allows for voluntary movement; cardiac muscle, which makes up the heart and allows it to pump blood; and smooth muscle, which is found in the walls of organs and structures such as the esophagus, stomach, intestines, bronchi, uterus, urethra, and blood vessels.
Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It is responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities.
Tissues come together to form organs, which perform complex functions. For example, the heart is made of muscle tissue that contracts to pump blood, nervous tissue that controls the heartbeat, and connective tissue that helps to structure and organize the other tissues.
