Lesser trochanter
Lesser Trochanter
The Lesser Trochanter (pronounced: LESS-er troh-KAN-ter) is a small, bony prominence located on the femur, the largest bone in the human body. It is one of the three trochanters found on the femur, the other two being the Greater Trochanter and the Third Trochanter.
Etymology
The term "trochanter" is derived from the Greek word "trokhántēr" which means "runner." This is in reference to the role these bony prominences play in the movement and function of the leg. The prefix "lesser" is used to differentiate this trochanter from the larger, more prominent Greater Trochanter.
Anatomy
The Lesser Trochanter is located on the medial (inner) side of the femur, just below the neck of the femur. It serves as the point of attachment for several important muscles, including the iliopsoas muscle, which is the primary flexor of the hip.
