It is a relatively new field that combines aspects of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Structural Biology to understand the physical and chemical properties of molecules in the context of their biological function.

The term "Molecular Anatomy" is derived from the Latin molecula, meaning "small mass", and the Greek anatomē, meaning "dissection". It reflects the field's focus on understanding the structure and function of biological molecules.
