Intussusceptive Angiogenesis

Intussusceptive angiogenesis (pronunciation: in-tuh-suh-sep-tiv an-gee-oh-gen-uh-sis) is a process involved in the formation of new blood vessels. This process is distinct from the more commonly known sprouting angiogenesis, and is characterized by the splitting of existing blood vessels to form new ones.

Etymology

The term 'intussusceptive' is derived from the Latin words 'intus', meaning 'within', and 'suscipere', meaning 'to take up'. 'Angiogenesis' is derived from the Greek words 'angeion', meaning 'vessel', and 'genesis', meaning 'creation'. Thus, 'intussusceptive angiogenesis' can be interpreted as 'the creation of vessels within'.

Process

Intussusceptive angiogenesis begins with the formation of transluminal tissue pillars in the existing blood vessels. These pillars then expand and split the vessel into two. This process is faster and more efficient than sprouting angiogenesis, as it does not require the migration of endothelial cells or the degradation of the basement membrane.

Role in Disease

Intussusceptive angiogenesis plays a significant role in various diseases, including cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In cancer, it contributes to tumor growth and metastasis. In pulmonary hypertension and COPD, it leads to the remodeling of pulmonary vessels.
