Pharyngeal veins
(Redirected from Venae pharyngeae)
Pharyngeal veins are veins that are part of the human anatomy and are located in the pharynx, or throat. They are responsible for draining the pharyngeal plexus and empty into the internal jugular vein.
Etymology
The term "pharyngeal" is derived from the Greek word "pharynx" which means "throat", and "vein" comes from the Latin word "vena", which means "blood vessel".
Structure
The pharyngeal veins originate from the pharyngeal plexus, a network of nerves located on the outer surface of the pharynx. They then drain into the internal jugular vein, which is a major blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the head and neck to the heart.
Function
The primary function of the pharyngeal veins is to drain deoxygenated blood from the pharynx and transport it to the internal jugular vein. This process is crucial for the body's overall blood circulation and oxygen supply.
Clinical significance
Abnormalities or damage to the pharyngeal veins can lead to various medical conditions. For instance, pharyngeal varices, which are enlarged and swollen veins in the pharynx, can cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and throat pain. In severe cases, they can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding.
