Cabergoline

Cabergoline (pronounced as ka-ber-goh-leen) is a medication primarily used in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia, a condition characterized by high levels of the hormone prolactin in the body. It is also used in the management of Parkinson's disease and other disorders related to the dopamine system.

Etymology

The term "Cabergoline" is derived from its chemical structure. It is a synthetic ergot derived medication, and its name is a combination of "ergot" and "bromine", indicating its brominated ergoline structure.

Usage

Cabergoline works by mimicking the action of dopamine, a type of neurotransmitter that sends signals in the brain to control body movements and other functions. It inhibits the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland, thereby reducing the symptoms of hyperprolactinemia such as irregular menstrual periods in women and decreased sexual ability in men.

In the treatment of Parkinson's disease, Cabergoline helps to improve the ability to move, decrease shakiness (tremor), and decrease the slowing of movement caused by the disease.

Related Terms

  • Dopamine agonists: A class of medication that mimics the effects of dopamine in the body. Cabergoline is a type of dopamine agonist.
  • Ergot alkaloids: A group of compounds derived from the ergot fungus. Cabergoline is a synthetic derivative of these compounds.
  • Pituitary gland: A small gland located at the base of the brain that produces several important hormones, including prolactin.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Cabergoline can cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and dizziness. More serious side effects can include shortness of breath, persistent cough, swelling ankles or feet, unusual tiredness, mental/mood changes, and unusual strong urges (such as increased gambling, increased sexual urges).
