Landiolol

From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

Landiolol is a beta blocker used in the treatment of tachycardia and hypertension. It is a highly cardioselective, ultra-short-acting beta blocker. Landiolol has a rapid onset and short duration of action, making it suitable for acute treatment situations.

Pharmacology[edit]

Landiolol is a beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This effect reduces heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Clinical Use[edit]

Landiolol is used in the treatment of tachyarrhythmia, especially in the setting of acute myocardial infarction and during surgery. It is also used to control heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.

Side Effects[edit]

Common side effects of landiolol include bradycardia, hypotension, and dizziness. Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Contraindications[edit]

Landiolol is contraindicated in patients with cardiogenic shock, severe bradycardia, and in patients with a known hypersensitivity to landiolol or any of its components.

Dosage[edit]

The dosage of landiolol is individualized based on the patient's heart rate and blood pressure response. It is typically administered as an intravenous infusion.
