Phenylpiperazine
Phenylpiperazine is a class of chemical compounds that contain a phenyl group and a piperazine ring. They are known for their use in the development of pharmaceutical drugs and research chemicals.
Chemistry[edit]
Phenylpiperazines are a broad class of compounds that contain a phenyl group (a functional group made up of six carbon atoms and five hydrogen atoms - C6H5) attached to a piperazine ring. Piperazine is a cyclic organic compound that consists of a six-membered ring containing two nitrogen atoms at opposite positions in the ring.
Pharmaceutical Use[edit]
Several drugs and experimental research chemicals are phenylpiperazines, including:
- Aripiprazole (Abilify), an antipsychotic and antidepressant
- Buspirone (Buspar), an anxiolytic
- Nefazodone (Serzone), an antidepressant
- Trazodone (Desyrel), an antidepressant
- Etidronate (Didronel), a medication used to treat a variety of bone diseases
- Fipronil, a broad-spectrum insecticide that belongs to the phenylpyrazole chemical family.
Research Chemicals[edit]
Phenylpiperazines are also used in the development of research chemicals. These are substances used by scientists for medical and scientific research purposes. One characteristic of a research chemical is that it is for laboratory research use only; a research chemical is not intended for human or veterinary use.
