Α-Ethyltryptamine (αET), also known as etryptamine, is a psychedelic, stimulant, and entactogen of the tryptamine class. It was originally developed as an antidepressant by the pharmaceutical company Upjohn in the 1960s.

Chemical Structure and Properties[edit]

Α-Ethyltryptamine is a substituted tryptamine with a chemical structure that includes an ethyl group attached to the alpha carbon of the tryptamine backbone. Its chemical formula is C12H16N2, and it has a molecular weight of 188.27 g/mol.

Pharmacology[edit]

Α-Ethyltryptamine acts primarily as a serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine releasing agent (SNDRA). It increases the levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to its psychoactive effects. The compound has been reported to produce effects similar to those of MDMA and other entactogens, including feelings of euphoria, empathy, and enhanced sensory perception.

History[edit]

Α-Ethyltryptamine was first synthesized in the 1960s by the pharmaceutical company Upjohn as a potential antidepressant. However, it was never marketed for this purpose. In the 1990s, αET gained popularity as a recreational drug due to its psychoactive properties.

Legal Status[edit]

Α-Ethyltryptamine is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, making it illegal to manufacture, buy, possess, or distribute without a DEA license. It is also controlled in many other countries under various drug laws.

Safety and Toxicity[edit]

The safety profile of α-ethyltryptamine is not well-documented, but it is known to have a high potential for abuse and dependence. Adverse effects may include tachycardia, hypertension, anxiety, and hallucinations. Due to its potent effects on the central nervous system, it is considered to be a substance with significant risk.
