Protirelin

Protirelin (pronounced proh-tih-REH-lin), also known as thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), is a tripeptide hormone that stimulates the release of thyrotropin and prolactin. It is produced in the hypothalamus and travels to the anterior pituitary via the hypophyseal portal system where it stimulates the release of these hormones.

Etymology

The term "protirelin" is derived from the Greek words "protos" meaning first, and "tireo" meaning shield, referring to the thyroid gland which the hormone primarily affects.

Function

Protirelin is responsible for the regulation of the thyroid gland. It stimulates the release of thyrotropin, also known as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and prolactin from the anterior pituitary gland. This process is crucial for the maintenance of normal thyroid function and regulation of the body's metabolism.

Related Terms

  • Thyrotropin: A hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
  • Prolactin: A hormone released by the anterior pituitary gland that stimulates milk production after childbirth.
  • Hypothalamus: A region of the brain that controls an immense range of bodily functions. It is responsible for the release of 8 major hormones by the pituitary gland.
  • Anterior pituitary: The front portion of the pituitary gland, a small gland located at the base of the brain. It produces hormones that control various bodily functions.
  • Hypophyseal portal system: A system of blood vessels in the brain that connects the hypothalamus with the anterior pituitary. Its main function is to quickly transport and exchange hormones between the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.
