Formoterol (pronounced: for-MOE-ter-ol) is a long-acting beta2 adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA) used in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Etymology
The term "Formoterol" is derived from its chemical name, which is 2'-hydroxy-5'-(1-hydroxy-2-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethylamino)ethyl]formanilide.
Usage
Formoterol is used as a bronchodilator for the treatment of asthma and COPD. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and increasing air flow to the lungs. Formoterol is often used in combination with other medications such as corticosteroids.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Formoterol include palpitations, tremor, and headache. Serious side effects may include an increased risk of asthma-related death, arrhythmias, and pneumonia.
