Fenoterol

Fenoterol (pronounced: feh-noh-TEH-rol) is a type of bronchodilator medication used primarily in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It belongs to the class of drugs known as beta2-adrenergic agonists.

Etymology

The term "Fenoterol" is derived from its chemical name, 3,5-dihydroxy-N-[3-(4-phenylbutoxy)phenyl]-benzamide. The prefix "Feno-" is derived from the Greek word "phaino," meaning "to show," and "terol" is a common suffix used in the names of bronchodilators.

Usage

Fenoterol works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs, helping them to open up. This makes it easier for people with asthma or COPD to breathe. It is typically administered via an inhaler.

Related Terms

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A group of lung diseases characterized by airflow obstruction that interferes with normal breathing.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Fenoterol can cause side effects. Common side effects include tremor, headache, palpitations, and muscle cramps. Serious side effects are rare but can include arrhythmia, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia.

Precautions

Fenoterol should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or seizure disorders. It should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fenoterol or any of its components.
