Cefazaflur

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Cefazaflur

Cefazaflur is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It belongs to the third generation of cephalosporins and is known for its broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of bacteria.

Mechanism of Action

Cefazaflur works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall. This binding leads to the inhibition of the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis, which ultimately causes cell lysis.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, Cefazaflur is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is widely distributed in body tissues and fluids. The drug is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine.

Clinical Uses

Cefazaflur is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. It is also effective against certain Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Cefazaflur include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects like allergic reactions, kidney damage, and blood disorders.

Contraindications

Cefazaflur is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of kidney disease or gastrointestinal disease.

Drug Interactions

Cefazaflur may interact with other drugs like probenecid, warfarin, and aminoglycosides. Therefore, it is important to inform the healthcare provider about all the medications being taken before starting treatment with Cefazaflur.
