Azlocillin
Azlocillin is an antibiotic belonging to the class of penicillins. It is a semi-synthetic compound that was developed to treat infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacteria. Azlocillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to the death of the bacteria. Azlocillin is administered intravenously, as its bioavailability is poor when taken by mouth. It is distributed widely in the body, including in the pleural fluid, ascites, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), making it useful in treating infections in various body sites.
Side Effects
Like other penicillins, azlocillin can cause a range of side effects. The most common include allergic reactions, which can range from mild rashes to severe anaphylaxis. Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are also common. Less frequently, patients may experience changes in blood counts, including neutropenia and thrombocytopenia, or liver enzyme elevations.

The emergence of bacterial resistance to azlocillin, as with other antibiotics, is a significant concern.
