Gamithromycin
Gamithromycin[edit]

Gamithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used primarily in veterinary medicine. It is a member of the azalide subclass of macrolides, which are characterized by a 15-membered lactone ring. Gamithromycin is specifically used to treat bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in cattle.
Mechanism of Action[edit]
Gamithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby preventing the translocation of peptides. This action is bacteriostatic, meaning it inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria rather than killing them directly.
Pharmacokinetics[edit]
After administration, gamithromycin is rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the body. It has a long half-life, which allows for sustained therapeutic concentrations in the tissues. This property makes it particularly effective for treating respiratory infections in cattle, as it maintains effective drug levels in the lungs.
Clinical Use[edit]
Gamithromycin is indicated for the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni. It is administered as a single subcutaneous injection, which is convenient for use in cattle.
Safety and Side Effects[edit]
Gamithromycin is generally well-tolerated in cattle. However, as with all antibiotics, there is a risk of developing antibiotic resistance. It is important to use gamithromycin judiciously and according to veterinary guidelines to minimize this risk.
