Cefoperazone (/sɛfəˈpɛrəzoʊn/) is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used in the treatment of various bacterial infections.
Etymology
The term "Cefoperazone" is derived from the parent class of antibiotics it belongs to, the cephalosporins. The prefix "Cef-" is common to all drugs in this class, while "-operazone" is unique to this particular antibiotic.
Usage
Cefoperazone is primarily used to treat severe bacterial infections that have proven resistant to other antibiotics. It is particularly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Mechanism of Action
Cefoperazone works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, thus inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Cefoperazone include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction.
