Mafenide
Mafenide is a sulfonamide type of antibiotic that is primarily used as a topical treatment for burn wounds to prevent and treat bacterial infections. It is commercially available as a cream or solution under the brand name Sulfamylon.
Etymology[edit]
The term "Mafenide" is derived from its chemical name, N-(4-aminobenzenesulfonyl)acetamide. The "ma" comes from the acetamide part of the name, and "fenide" is derived from the 4-aminobenzenesulfonyl part.
Pharmacology[edit]
Mafenide works by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is necessary for the synthesis of folic acid. This prevents the bacteria from producing folic acid, which is essential for their growth and reproduction.
Uses[edit]
Mafenide is used to prevent and treat bacterial infections in burn wounds. It is also used in combination with other antibiotics to treat severe burn wounds that are infected with a variety of bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.
Side Effects[edit]
Common side effects of Mafenide include pain or burning sensation at the application site, rash, itching, and redness. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, breathing problems, and changes in skin color.
