Etymology
The term "Cefoxitin" is derived from the cephalosporin family of antibiotics, with the prefix "Cef-" indicating its relation to this group, and the suffix "-oxitin" being unique to this specific drug. The name was coined by the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., which first synthesized the drug in the 1970s.
Usage
Cefoxitin is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those caused by E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and S. aureus. It is also used in the prevention of infections in surgical procedures.
Mechanism of Action
Cefoxitin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which inhibits the cross-linking of the peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Cefoxitin include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More serious side effects may include allergic reactions, C. difficile infection, and kidney damage.
