OnabotulinumtoxinA

OnabotulinumtoxinA (pronounced as oh-na-bot-yoo-lin-um-tox-in-A), also known as Botox, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles.

Etymology

The term "OnabotulinumtoxinA" is derived from Ona- (a prefix used by the manufacturer), botulinum (referring to the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that produces the toxin), toxin (indicating its toxic nature), and A (referring to the specific type of the toxin).

Usage

OnabotulinumtoxinA is used in medicine to treat various muscle spasms and diseases caused by overactive muscles, including cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and strabismus. It is also used in the treatment of chronic migraine, overactive bladder, and hyperhidrosis.

In cosmetic applications, OnabotulinumtoxinA is used to temporarily smooth wrinkles, particularly in the uppermost third of the face. Injection of OnabotulinumtoxinA into the muscles under facial wrinkles causes relaxation of those muscles, resulting in the smoothing of the overlying skin.
