Oxydemeton-methyl
Oxydemeton-methyl is a systemic insecticide and acaricide that is used to control a wide range of insects and mites on crops. It is an organophosphate compound that acts by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that is essential for the normal functioning of the nervous system in insects.
Chemistry
Oxydemeton-methyl is a methyl derivative of demeton, a highly toxic organophosphate insecticide. It is a colorless liquid with a slight sulfur odor. The chemical formula of oxydemeton-methyl is C6H12NO4PS2.
Mode of action
Oxydemeton-methyl acts by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that transmits signals in the nervous system. By inhibiting this enzyme, oxydemeton-methyl causes an accumulation of acetylcholine in the nervous system, leading to overstimulation and eventual death of the insect or mite.
Uses
Oxydemeton-methyl is used to control a wide range of insects and mites on crops such as cotton, fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamentals. It is also used in the control of mosquitoes and other public health pests.
Toxicity
Oxydemeton-methyl is highly toxic to humans and animals. Exposure can cause a range of symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, salivation, sweating, and blurred vision. In severe cases, it can cause seizures, respiratory failure, and death.
Environmental impact
Oxydemeton-methyl is highly toxic to aquatic organisms and bees. It is also persistent in the environment and can contaminate groundwater.
Regulation
In many countries, the use of oxydemeton-methyl is regulated due to its high toxicity and environmental impact. In the European Union, it is banned under the Pesticides Directive.
