Guatemala
Guatemala
Guatemala (pronunciation: /ˌɡwɑːtəˈmɑːlə/), officially known as the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America.
Etymology
The name "Guatemala" comes from the Nahuatl word Cuauhtēmallān, or "place of many trees", a translation of the K'iche' Mayan word for "many trees" or perhaps more specifically for the Cuate/Cuatli tree Eysenhardtia.
Geography
Guatemala is bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize and the Caribbean to the northeast, Honduras to the east, El Salvador to the southeast and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
Demographics
The majority of the population is of Mestizo (mixed Indigenous and European) descent. The remainder consists of Indigenous peoples, particularly the Maya, and people of African descent.
Health
The healthcare system in Guatemala is divided into three sectors: public, private nonprofit, and private for-profit. The public sector is coordinated by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS).
Language
The official language of Guatemala is Spanish. There are also 21 Mayan languages spoken, especially in rural areas, as well as two non-Mayan Amerindian languages, Xinca, an indigenous language, and Garifuna, an Arawakan language spoken on the Caribbean coast.
Economy
The economy is dominated by the private sector, which generates about 85% of GDP.
Culture
Guatemalan culture is influenced by the country's history with both Mayan civilization and Spanish colonization. This is reflected in the country's literature, music, and cuisine.
