Afghanistan (ăf-găn′ĭ-stăn′)

Afghanistan (pronounced ăf-găn′ĭ-stăn′) is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast.

Etymology

The name "Afghanistan" means "land of the Afghans", which originates from the ethnonym "Afghan". The term "Afghan" historically referred to a member of the ethnic Pashtuns, and the suffix "-stan" means "place of" in Persian.

Health in Afghanistan

Healthcare in Afghanistan is provided by a mix of public and private providers. The Ministry of Public Health is responsible for healthcare delivery across the country. The health status of Afghanistan's population ranks at the bottom globally, with high levels of infant mortality and maternal mortality, and low levels of immunization.
