Costa Rica (pronounced /ˌkoʊstə ˈriːkə/, Spanish: [ˈkosta ˈrika]; literally "Rich Coast"), officially the Republic of Costa Rica (Spanish: República de Costa Rica), is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island.
Etymology
The name "Costa Rica" is derived from the Spanish words for "Rich Coast". It was given this name by Christopher Columbus, who believed the land to be filled with precious metals.
Health Care in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has a universal health care system, administered by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS). The country is known for its high-quality medical care, often at a fraction of the cost of the same procedures in the United States. This has led to a boom in medical tourism, with people traveling to Costa Rica for procedures ranging from dental work to cosmetic surgery.
