Palestine (pælɪstaɪn)
Palestine (pronounced /ˈpælɪstaɪn/), is a geographic region in Western Asia usually considered to include Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and in some definitions, parts of western Jordan.
Etymology
The word Palestine derives from Latin Palaestīna, from Greek Palaistinē (Παλαιστίνη), originally denoting the Semitic Philistine territories. The word is first attested in Herodotus' Histories (5th century BC), where it denotes generally the coastal land from Phoenicia down to Egypt.
