Palau (pronounced /pəˈlaʊ/), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It is not a medical term, but it is relevant to the field of Tropical Medicine due to its geographical location and associated health issues.

Etymology

The name "Palau" entered the English language from the Spanish Los Palaos, via the German Palau. In English, the islands were originally called the "Pelew Islands". It is uncertain where the word "Palau" comes from; however, it may derive from the Palauan word for "village" or "island".
