Moldova
Moldova
Moldova (pronunciation: /mɒlˈdoʊvə/), officially known as the Republic of Moldova (Romanian: Republica Moldova), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe.
Etymology
The name "Moldova" is derived from the Moldova River; the valley of this river served as a political centre at the time of the foundation of the Principality of Moldavia in 1359.
Geography
Moldova is a landlocked country bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The capital city is Chișinău.
History
Moldova declared independence on 27 August 1991 as part of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The current Constitution of Moldova was adopted in 1994.
Politics
Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. It is a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and aspires to join the European Union.
Economy
Moldova remains one of the poorest countries in Europe despite significant progress in reducing poverty and promoting inclusive growth since the early 2000s. The economy is based on service industries, followed by agriculture and food processing.
Culture
Moldovan culture is a mix of Romanian culture and Soviet culture. The traditional folk music is notably complex. The Moldovan Orthodox Church, like the Romanian Orthodox Church, celebrates the liturgical calendar in the "Old Style" (Julian Calendar), which lags 13 days behind the "New Style" (Gregorian Calendar).
