South Sudan (/saʊθ suːˈdɑːn/), officially known as the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in East-Central Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, the Central African Republic to the west, and Sudan to the north.
Etymology
The name "South Sudan" is derived from the country's geographical location; it is located in the southern part of the Sudan region. The term "Sudan" itself comes from the Arabic "bilād as-sūdān" (بلاد السودان), or "land of the blacks", an expression denoting West and Northern-Central Africa.
