Nicaragua
Nicaragua
Nicaragua (pronunciation: /ˌnɪkəˈrɑːɡwə, -ˈræɡ-, -ɡjuə/), officially known as the Republic of Nicaragua, is a country in Central America. It is the largest country in the Central American isthmus, bordered by Honduras to the northwest and Costa Rica to the south.
Etymology
The name "Nicaragua" was coined by Spanish colonists based on the name "Nicarao", chief of the most populous indigenous tribe when the Spanish arrived, and the Spanish word "Agua", meaning water, due to the presence of the large lakes Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua in the region.
