Taiwan (tai•wan)
Taiwan (pronounced /taɪˈwɑːn/), officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is an island country in East Asia.
Etymology
The name "Taiwan" is derived from the indigenous Siraya language. The original word was "Tayowan", which means "people of Tayo". The Portuguese were the first Europeans to see Taiwan, and they named it "Ilha Formosa", which means "beautiful island".
