Octreotide Acetate

Octreotide Acetate (pronounced as ok-TREE-oh-tide AS-e-tate) is a synthetic octapeptide that mimics natural somatostatin pharmacologically, though it is a more potent inhibitor of growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin than the natural hormone.

Etymology

The term "Octreotide" is derived from its chemical structure, which consists of eight amino acids (octa- meaning eight in Greek) in a cyclic formation. "Acetate" refers to the salt form of the drug, which is used to improve its stability and absorption in the body.

Usage

Octreotide Acetate is used to treat severe diarrhea and flushing caused by certain types of cancer. It is also used to treat acromegaly when surgery or radiation treatment have not been fully successful or cannot be used. It works by decreasing the amount of growth hormone to normal levels.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Octreotide Acetate include nausea, stomach pain or discomfort, gas, and diarrhea. Serious side effects can include gallstones, high blood sugar, slow heart rate, and thyroid problems.

Precautions

Before using Octreotide Acetate, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products, allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions.
