It can be given to people who are unable to absorb nutrients through the intestinal tract due to persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, or intestinal disorders. It can also be given to people undergoing high-dose chemotherapy or radiation and bone marrow transplantation. It is possible to provide all of the protein, calories, vitamins and minerals that a human needs through total parenteral nutrition. Also called hyperalimentation, parenteral nutrition and TPN
