Norbuprenorphine-3-glucuronide
Norbuprenorphine-3-glucuronide is a major active metabolite of buprenorphine, an opioid medication used to treat opioid addiction, acute pain, and chronic pain. It is formed in the body by the action of the enzyme UDP-glucuronosyltransferase on norbuprenorphine, another metabolite of buprenorphine.
Pharmacology[edit]
Norbuprenorphine-3-glucuronide has been found to possess opioid activity, although its potency relative to buprenorphine and norbuprenorphine is not clear. It is thought to contribute to the overall effects of buprenorphine in the body.
Metabolism[edit]
Buprenorphine is metabolized in the liver by the enzyme cytochrome P450 3A4 to produce norbuprenorphine. Norbuprenorphine is then further metabolized by the enzyme UDP-glucuronosyltransferase to produce norbuprenorphine-3-glucuronide.
