Bacitracin zinc (pronunciation: /bæsɪˈtreɪsɪn ˈzɪŋk/) is a type of antibiotic that is used to prevent minor skin infections caused by small cuts, scrapes, or burns. It belongs to a class of drugs known as antibiotics.
Etymology
The term "Bacitracin" is derived from the name of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis, from which it was first isolated, and "zinc" refers to the zinc ion that is part of the compound.
Usage
Bacitracin zinc works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria. It is applied topically to the skin to help prevent infection in minor skin injuries. Bacitracin zinc is not effective against fungal or viral infections.
