Ipratropium Bromide

Ipratropium bromide (pronounced as ip-ra-TROE-pee-um BROE-mide) is a medication used in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It is a type of bronchodilator that works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and increasing the airflow to the lungs.

Etymology

The term "Ipratropium" is derived from its chemical structure, which is an isopropyl derivative of atropine. "Bromide" refers to the bromine atom that is part of its chemical structure.

Usage

Ipratropium bromide is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD which includes bronchitis and emphysema). It is also used to treat asthma. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Ipratropium bromide include dry mouth, cough, and headache. Serious side effects may include difficulty urinating, eye pain, and worsening of breathing problems.

Precautions

Before using Ipratropium bromide, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or to atropine or other belladonna-type drugs, or if you have any other allergies.
