urinary retention - (pronounced) (YOOR-ih-NAYR-ee reh-TEN-avoid) condition in which urine cannot be emptied from the bladder. Urinary retention can be acute and develop very quickly, or it can be chronic and occur over a long period of time. Signs and symptoms include an inability to urinate, feeling like you need to urinate immediately, urinating frequently but in small amounts, leakage of urine, and pain or swelling in the lower abdomen. Urinary retention is usually caused by a blockage or narrowing of the bladder or urethra (the tube through which urine leaves the body). This can be caused by an enlarged prostate, a bulging or flabby bladder, kidney or bladder stones, a tumor, infection, or inflammation. Urinary retention can also be caused by nerve problems, weak bladder muscles, surgery, and certain medications
