Second Trimester

The Second Trimester (/ˈtrɪmɪstər/; from Latin trimestris, "of three months") is a period of pregnancy that lasts from the 13th week to the 27th week. It is the middle phase of a typical 40-week pregnancy, following the First Trimester and preceding the Third Trimester.

Etymology

The term "trimester" comes from the Latin trimestris, which is derived from tri- ("three") and -mester (akin to menses, "month"). In the context of pregnancy, it refers to one of the three roughly three-month periods into which pregnancy is divided.

Overview

During the second trimester, the fetus undergoes significant development. The fetus's organs, such as the brain, heart, and lungs, continue to develop. The mother may begin to feel the fetus moving, a phenomenon known as quickening.

Medical Considerations

Routine prenatal care continues during the second trimester, and may include various tests and screenings such as the anatomy scan. This is also a period where certain complications or issues may arise or be detected, such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.
