Sexual harassment (/sɛkʃuːəl həˈræsmənt/; from Latin sexus meaning "sex" and Middle French harasser meaning "to exhaust repeatedly") is a type of harassment involving the use of explicit or implicit sexual overtones, including unwelcome or inappropriate promises of rewards in exchange for sexual favors.
Definition
Sexual harassment includes a range of actions from mild transgressions to sexual abuse or sexual assault. Harassers or victims may be of any gender. In most modern legal contexts, sexual harassment is illegal. The legal and social understanding of sexual harassment, however, varies by culture.
Types
Sexual harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, often, but not always, involving a power imbalance. It can include such tactics as verbal harassment, physical harassment, and visual harassment.
Verbal Harassment
Verbal harassment includes comments that are offensive or unwelcome regarding a person's nationality, origin, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, body, disability or appearance, including epithets, slurs, and negative stereotyping.
Physical Harassment
Physical harassment includes unwelcome, unwanted physical contact, including touching, tickling, pinching, patting, brushing up against, hugging, cornering, kissing, fondling, and forced sexual intercourse or assault.
Visual Harassment
Visual harassment includes derogatory and/or sexually-oriented posters, cards, cartoons, graffiti, drawings, or gestures.
Consequences
Sexual harassment can lead to significant psychological, physical, and economic effects. This may include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety, and work-related stress.
Prevention
Prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace requires a combination of comprehensive policies, regular training, and a culture of respect.
